student photoWhat is your area of study?

My area of study is Fashion Design and Merchandising. I joined the School of Architecture fall 2011 and I will graduate in May 2014.

What do you plan on doing with your degree?

Now that I have almost earned my degree, I have developed my skills and knowledge of fashion design and apparel development. I have also learned how to manage and operate a business. With my degree, I plan on starting my own clothing line and hope to expand into other ventures to eventually create a lifestyle brand.

What first interested you in the SIU School of Architecture and why did you choose SIU instead of another school?

As an Illinois Army Veteran, I received a 100% tuition grant to pursue my education at any public Illinois university or college. As I was interested in fashion, SIU was the only public university that offered a fashion program with several specialization options.

What was your greatest challenge in the program?

My greatest challenge in the program was learning to have a delicate hand. As you can image… in the military, you do a lot of things roughly. I overcame this challenge by practicing being delicate with the fabric.

What is your advice to students who may be thinking about applying to the Fashion Design & Merchandising program?

If you love something and have a passion for it, pursue it. Don’t let anyone deter you from your goals. The programs in the School of Architecture are demanding and require a lot of time, but don’t be discouraged… it’s well worth it.
