IPAL Program Description
The IPAL Master of Architecture program at Southern Illinois University is a combined undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and Graduate professional program leading to the accredited Master of Architecture degree. Master’s degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education.
Students may complete the Master of Architecture degree in as little as 15 months of study! (Most master’s degree programs require 24 months.) The reduced timeframe can result in a savings of thousands of dollars in tuition, rent, and other living expenses while fully preparing the graduate for a professional career.
We are proud of our broad-based program which focuses on the study of:
- the architecture of the Upper Mississippi Delta Region
- global architecture
- the development of technical tools that will achieve excellence in architecture
- ecologically responsive architecture
Students are required to develop their individual research theses and/or design projects augmented by selected seminars and interdisciplinary courses.
Students, who have already earned a four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies degree, or its equivalent, may be able to complete the program in as little as 15 months of study. Students from other majors may be required to complete additional coursework (see the 27- and 39-month curriculum guides).
The graduate program consists of 56 total credit hours. These credits are completed over the course of four continuous semesters, allowing the student to graduate in 15 months. The beginning summer semester provides an initial experience and overview of regional architecture and urban design issues. Building upon this introduction, the student identifies and develops a thesis design project over the next three semesters. This is augmented by seminars, electives, and courses in global architecture and professional practice.
Every student graduating from SIU with a Master of Architecture degree must meet National Architectural Accrediting Board Student Performance Criteria.
